Those are fantastic!

I find Elizabeth's particularly striking. And Eugene's...

So Oren and Yuri had to share...?

Could just be that their individual ones didn't work out. Or they didn't want individual ones. I'm sure there's no sinister reason. Wink

edit: they are stills from the Immigraniada video... http://www.avenue-b.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4477

Those really are gorgeous! I wonder if it would be awfully wrong of me to steal them and make them my desktop pics? One for each day of the week.[/b]

These are simply gorgeous gorgeous photography and beautiful design. I am a bit cautious about them though.

Why is Elizabeth put as 'China'? She's also - I don't know how 'also', but I guess to a significant extent - Scottish. Eugene is surely to a strong degree a New Yorker, which is a subtle distinction but it's probably one of the only scenes in which something as crazy and diverse as GB can come through, so it's an incredibly important cultural influence as well as the Ukraine; and so on. I don't know so much about the others. This is also not an interrogation of the purity or authenticity of the band's roots, by the way. That would be horrible. It's just a call to think about hybridity as well as diversity.

This also isn't a 'OMG won't somebody please think about the Uk and the US??' - ugh - because I couldn't care less about re-asserting the cultural dominance of these places, but I also get worried when certain ethnic or cultural identities are fetishised, as though they add extra cachet to things merely by being of a certain origin. Sometimes marketing gestures like this can fetishise things.

Then again, perhaps this is not fetishising but pure celebration, which is brave and totally needed (where I live and work, Cairo, there is no way you could shout about one of your band members being from Israel, an aspect of Cairo that I totally deplore).

Still, it raises subtle questions for me... I adore GB's cultural and ethnic diversity - they are trailblazers for rewriting the rule books on this - I just get a bit guarded when someone is oversold as 'representative' of an ethnicity or a culture.

Well, this is an enormous discussion. And the main thing is, every band member is clearly more than proud and happy to have this representation, which is 99% of the deal.

Ok, meandering over!

She was actually born in England and just grew up in Scotland, so we can throw that into the debate if you like.

In my eyes, the point of these portraits is not to debate this kind of thing; it's about heritage. It's about recognising your roots and celebrating them.

For all we know, Elizabeth could have been given the choice: UK or China.

If we look at these images simply as portraits then there are certainly other layers to all of the band member's identities that they don't show.

But as stills from the video, they only need to tell part of the story. The video seems to be set in New York, and I think the message there is that everyone in it is a New Yorker. However, they also have their own distinct roots and backgrounds, and these are represented by the map overlays.

Had the video been set in Rio, for example, then New York would be as valid an identifier as Ukraine to apply to Eugene. As it is, the backdrop of New York stands for hybridity, while the individual portraits reveal diversity.

No hometown! :-p
With regards to nationality, I suppose you better go for Denmark. I mean, I do live here and stuff. Unless you wanna go crazy and do a Funen/Sardinia combo!

These photo's are great, I have to agree with Perdita's post too...she,you puts it so well. So what of the Mongrels ,the Heinz 57's ....cultural diversity...the big melting pot.Personnaly my roots are totally mixed. If I had the knowledge my photo would be a montage of Uk , Spain and Ireland and would read...Uspainland.
